What to know about Hindi translation
Hindi is written in the Devanagari script and is the most widely spoken language in India, with roughly 600 million speakers counting those who use it as a second language. A few things that affect how a translation reads:
- Politeness changes the words. Hindi has आप (formal), तुम (casual) and तू (very familiar). Translations here default to the polite आप form, which is the safe choice with strangers, elders and in any work setting.
- Gender changes the verb. "I am going" is मैं जा रहा हूँ if a man says it and मैं जा रही हूँ if a woman does. If a sentence comes out with the wrong ending, rephrase with the subject made explicit.
- Everyday Hindi borrows English words. Words like ticket, station and mobile are used as-is in speech, so a translation that keeps them is usually more natural, not less.
