What to know about Tamil translation
Tamil has its own ancient script and about 80 million speakers, and it holds official status in Tamil Nadu, Sri Lanka and Singapore. It differs from north Indian languages in ways that show up directly in translations:
- Written and spoken Tamil are not the same. Tamil has a formal written form and a everyday spoken form. Machine translation produces the written form, which is correct and understood everywhere — it simply reads more formal than street speech.
- Respect is built into the verb. நீங்கள் is the respectful "you" and நீ the familiar one; the verb ending changes with it. Translations use the respectful form by default.
- Word order is flexible. Tamil puts the verb at the end and marks roles with suffixes, so a literal word-for-word reading back into English will look scrambled even when the translation is right.
