Tips for reading Hindi translations
Hindi is written in the Devanagari script. A few things help you get a clearer English result:
- Devanagari or Roman letters. Hindi is written in the Devanagari script, but many people type it in English letters (for example, "aap kaise hain"). Translating from Devanagari is generally more reliable, so if a Roman-letter message comes out strangely, try the Devanagari spelling or speak it instead.
- One "you" in English, three in Hindi. Hindi distinguishes आप (formal), तुम (casual) and तू (very familiar). English has only "you", so the level of politeness is lost in translation. Keep it in mind when reading a translated message from someone you do not know.
- Gender is hidden in the verb. A Hindi verb often shows whether the speaker is male or female, while English does not. Check who is speaking before relying on a translated sentence.
