Overview
Rosetta is a free browser-based language translator available at languagetransalator.com, built and maintained by Akshay Mahajan. This policy explains what information is collected when you use Rosetta and how it is used.
What happens to the text you translate
Rosetta does not keep what you translate. There are no accounts and no server of ours that stores your text, audio or video. To produce a translation, though, the text has to go somewhere:
- Text translation. The text you type or speak is sent to Google Translate to be translated. If that fails, it is sent to MyMemory (Translated srl) instead. Those services receive the text and your IP address, under their own privacy policies.
- Voice input. The microphone uses your browser's built-in speech recognition. In Chrome and Edge the audio is processed by Google or Microsoft respectively to turn it into text.
- Read aloud. Playback uses the voices built into your device and browser.
- Video calls. Calls connect the two browsers directly (peer-to-peer). The PeerJS service (0.peerjs.com) is used only to introduce the two devices. If a direct connection is not possible, the encrypted call is relayed through the Open Relay TURN service. Calls are not recorded.
Do not use Rosetta for confidential, medical or legal text that you would not want a third-party translation service to receive.
Stored on your device
Rosetta saves a few things in your own browser's local storage, never on a server: your last chosen languages, light or dark theme, your recent translations list, and whether you dismissed the "add to home screen" prompt. Clearing your browser data, or the Clear button on the recent list, removes them.
Advertising and cookies
This site shows ads from Google AdSense. Google and its partners use cookies to serve ads based on your previous visits to this and other websites. Google's use of advertising cookies lets it and its partners serve ads based on those visits.
- You can turn off personalised ads in Google's Ads Settings, or opt out of some third-party vendors at aboutads.info.
- Visitors in the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland are asked for consent before personalised ads are shown.
- How Google uses data from sites that use its services: policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
Rosetta itself sets no cookies and runs no analytics or tracking scripts.
