How to have a translated conversation
- Open Conversation mode — this page opens Rosetta on the Conversation tab.
- Set both languages — pick what Person A speaks and what Person B speaks.
- Tap and talk — Person A taps their button and speaks; Rosetta translates and reads it aloud for Person B.
- Reply the same way — Person B taps their button and answers. Keep going, back and forth.
Hearing how a translation is pronounced
Reading a translation is only half the job — most people also want to know how to say it. Every translation here can be read aloud in the target language, so you can copy the pronunciation instead of guessing at an unfamiliar script.
- Type or speak, then listen. Enter the sentence, pick the language, and tap the speaker icon to hear it spoken at natural speed.
- Repeat it back. Play it, say it aloud yourself, then speak it into the microphone — if the translation comes back the way you meant it, your pronunciation was clear enough to be understood.
- Works for Indian languages too. Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Bengali, Punjabi and Malayalam are all read aloud, which helps when you can read the meaning but not the script.
When a conversation translator actually helps
Conversation mode is built for the moment two people who do not share a language have to get something done. It is most useful when:
- Talking to family across languages — a grandparent who speaks only Marathi or Gujarati, and grandchildren who mostly speak English.
- At a shop, hospital or government office in a state whose language you do not speak, where getting the detail exactly right matters.
- Practising a language — say a sentence in English, hear it in the language you are learning, and repeat until it sounds right.
- At work with a colleague, driver or contractor whose comfortable language is different from yours.
One honest limitation: speech recognition needs a reasonably quiet spot and short, complete sentences. In a noisy market, typing the sentence and letting the phone read it aloud is more reliable than speaking it.

Yes. Say or type a sentence in English, listen to it in the language you are learning, then speak it back into the microphone. If it transcribes the way you intended, you were clear enough to be understood.
Does it need an internet connection?
Yes — speech recognition and translation both run online, so you need a working connection. Nothing is installed and no account is required.
Why did it mishear what I said?
Usually background noise or a very long sentence. Move somewhere quieter, hold the phone closer, and speak in short complete sentences — or type the text instead and let it read the translation aloud.
